Dentin as a Dental Bone Graft

Tooth Grinder; Dentin Grinder

Developed first in 2014, the KometaBio protocol is an FDA, CE and UKCA-approved process which converts extracted teeth into a best-in-class autologous bone graft material with over 60 publications testifying to the protocol’s predictability and performance.

Dentin is comprised of similar levels of hydroxyapatite and collagen with higher levels of growth factors and BMP. These similarities mean the body immediately recognizes dentin bone grafts ‘as its own’ encouraging faster healing compared to cadaver-derived allograft or animal-derived xenograft.   Dentin offers a superior scaffold for clot stabilization and bone-stimulating osteoinductivity – just like autogenous bone – without donor-site trauma.

  • Contain type 1 Collagen plus growth factors (BMP-2 & TGF)
  • Regenerate up to 63% of vital new bone.
  • Show direct (Ankylosis) in histology.
  • Create high patient engagement and enhanced implant consent.
  • Increase implant consent due to enhanced patient engagement.
  • Ridge Preservation. (AKA Socket Preservation)
    • Teeth recycled using KometaBio offer a high-density graft ideal for long-term volume preservation when placed in a freshly extracted and degranulated socket.
  • Immediate Placement Defects
    • Use the osteoinductive stem cell and growth factors alone or as supplements to fully resorbable particulates such as Powerbone Granules.
  • Ridge Augmentation.
    • Combine KometaBio prepared Dentin Dentin graft with a fully resorbing bioactive synthetic such as Powerbone Resorbing Granules or Powerbone Flexible graft for an onlay or inlay procedure. For grafting outside the bone envelope consider combining with slowly resorbing HA-based Ti-oss (xenograft) or Powerbone Biphasic (synthetic).
  • Sticky Bone.
    • Combine KometaBio-prepared Dentin with a freshly prepared PRF membrane (slug) to create an osteoinductive sticky bone graft. (See separate protocol)

The KometaBio Dentin Processor (also known as the Tooth Grinder) is used in conjunction with a Kometabio consumables kit (sterile blade, pots and cleaning solutions). The processor grinds the prepared tooth and sieves the granules which are then ready to be cleaned in the KometaBio solutions to create a patient-specific bone graft.  The protocol utilizes highly effective liquids that eliminate organic tissue from the dentin. The KometaBio solutions remove bacteria and toxins and buffer the particulate to a normal pH level.  Composite and fillings are removed before processing with a high-speed bur.

The process takes around 8 minutes and can largely be completed by the dental assistant saving clinical time.  See a step-by-step video of the KometaBio tooth grinder process HERE.

  • Are there risks in using KometaBio-processed Dentin?
    • No adverse reactions have been reported when following the protocol.
  • Can the tooth be stored and processed later?
    • Yes. The tooth can be saved, cleaned, and stored for the lifetime of the patient. When ready for surgery the tooth is processed normally. More here.
  • Does KometaBio save money?
    • Each KometaBio Dentin process consumes one disposable pack costing less than £50. You can expect between 1 and 2.5cc’ of bone graft from each tooth meaning that 1cc of detin-derived bone graft costs around £23. This makes KometaBio Bone Graft around 1/4 the cost of a proprietary bone graft and similar to autogenous bone harvested using a disposable bone scraper.
  • What studies are available on KometaBio and Dentin Bone Grafts?
    • There are over 60 publications testifying to the successful and predictable performance of dentin-derived bone grafting. You can see some of these HERE. Contact Regen Store for an up-to-date list.
