TI-OSS – THREE DIFFERENCES KEY TO CLINICAL SUCCESS 

PORE SIZE AND DENSITY

Ti-oss uses only the cancellous portion, which is more porous and less dense than grafts containing cortical parts, such as Bio-oss, Straumann Xenograft and mixes of processed allograft.

->High porosity is a prerequisite to clot adsorption and blood penetration.   

->High Porosity means less graft is needed. 1.0g of Ti-oss is equivalent to 2.3cc. By comparison, 1g of Bio-Oss standard particle is equivalent to 2cc.

PROCESSING

Ti-Oss is processed using mid-level temperature and controlled vitrification. This creates an optimal surface (see below) and a higher proportion of material the body can replace rather than high temperature procesing wihc creates a denser, more crystalline form that the body cannot remodel. 

  • All xenograft (animal) and allograft (another human) tissue must be processed to make them safe for use.

  • Traditional processing, as used for Bio-Oss or Cerabone, uses high heat, creating a denser, more crystalline material that the body is less able to remodel.

  • When faced with dense materials, the body treats them as a foreign body and often encapsulates remnants in fibrous tissue. 

-> 22.7 graft remnants v 26.3% for Bio-Oss (Yoona Jung) with up to 35% reported by Valentin (JOMI 2018. 33 (6) @1345-1350)

SURFACE PROPERTIES

Ti-oss is created with a roughened Octa Calcium Phosphate hydrophilic surface coating, shown to:  

->Encourage ‘fast bone formation’ and ‘exert a positive effect on the osteoinductive properties of biomaterials’ 

-> Enhance clot adhesion and improve osteoblast retention compared to alternatives.
